In vitro quality of frozen-thawed red blood cells during storage in SAG-M. Red blood cells were either frozen with (□) or without (■) prefreeze removal of excess glycerol. After thawing and deglycerolization of frozen red blood cells, the red blood cells were resuspended in SAG-M, stored at 4oC and analyzed for in vitro quality parameters: (A) hemolysis and (B) supernatant potassium. The results given are the mean and standard deviation of 5 units for without prefreeze removal and 30 units for prefreeze removal of excess glycerol. *Significantly different (P<0.05, Student’s t-test) from the values obtained with prefreeze removal of excess glycerol.
